Day 21. A Bit Of Anchorman And My Own News report

Gooood morning San Diego! An everlasting quote from Anchorman. And incase you haven't quite caught on, yes San Diego was my destination. It's about a two and a half hour drive south towards Mexico.
Like most I've heard so much about San Diego, why? Manly films sure but it's one of the places on my list of America to see. Again, why? I don’t fully know, but you assume that with larger cities they'll be so much to do. Culturally, historically and socially. For example name 3 places. Winchester, Portsmouth and dare I say Birmingham. All three of these places are enriched with art and history as well as having modern shopping centres etc. well unfortunately in the centre of San Diego there isn't.
There is a nice Marina and a WW2 Aircraft carrier that boasted of its successful missions. But I can't imagine an Aircraft Carrier going directly into battle, surely they'd hang back and send out the jets. Now who can I ask? Oh, the woman in full military gear working on board. On second thoughts maybe not.

We walked back up through 5th street which is where 'it all happens' only to be stopped by a protest. This is brilliant! People were shouting all sorts. As I looked on as an intriguing tourist I also wanted to see their leader. I had no idea what they were protesting about and who they were angry with.

My critic was; they needed to have clearer message. I thought it was a parade and looked out for a drunk father Christmas like on Miracle on 34th Street. But they held up traffic and created some mayhem, so mission accomplished. One guy who particularly stood out had a sign like a ballot box.

An empty box and then 'Republican'
An empty box and then 'Democrat'
A ticked box and then 'Pissed Off'.

I assume he wasn’t happy. But his tactics were quite bullish and he was walking up to people shouting 'Open your eyes' and 'stop being so ignorant' if I was someone who prayed I was praying he'd come to me...he did. 'Open your goddam eyes' he blurted. 'I'm from England we know exactly what's going on'. Didn't really know what to say to that. He moved on and I felt politically minded. Maybe I should join in? Nah.

We went to Old Town which is exactly the history and culture I

was looking for. San Diego was an ol unlawful cowboy town with Mexicans mainly ruling. Everything in Old Town was set up accordingly, the shops would say 'Tin Bender' or 'Tobacco and Guns Sold Here'. Which were all good fun, but inside it was the same old tat. A rug, a flag and a jumper. A bit misleading. But authentic and historical, just what I want out of somewhere new. A good day and something I didn't think I would be getting the chance to tick off my list.

Lesson learnt. Always know what you're preaching for. If you don't know, how will anyone else?
